Wendell Elbert is a minor antagonist mentioned in The Stand. He is the father of Trashcan Man and had murdered his two other sons and his daughter, and before he could kill his wife he was gunned down by Sheriff Greeley, who became Trash's stepfather.
Biography[]
Wendell had experienced a worsening of his mental stability for a number of years. One night he snapped; he got into a barroom argument where he shot and killed the bartender. Returning home, Wendell killed his three oldest children, two sons and a daughter. Sally managed to flee the house with five-year-old Donald; intent upon killing them as well, Wendell kept firing until his cheap gun exploded and disfigured his face. Finally Sheriff Greeley arrived on the scene, shooting and killing Wendell when he refused to stand down.
