Walter T. Bannerman (b. 1967; d. 17 June 2007) was the son of Joe Bannerman, the husband of Sarah Bracknell, the former girlfriend of Johnny Smith, the step-father of J.J. Bannerman, and the biological father of Hope Smith. He served as the sheriff of the Penobscot County Police Department and worked together with Johnny Smith in solving many cases until he died in a fire at the Faith Heritage Chapel while struggling with Malcolm Janus (who also died) on 17 June 2007, at which point he was replaced by Sheriff pro-tem Anna Turner.
Bannerman's was portrayed by Chris Bruno.

Bannerman's character was a combination of two characters from the novel: Penobscot County Sheriff George Bannerman, and Sarah's husband Walt Hazlett.
