"The Way Station" is a novella originally published in the April 1980 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.
The story is preceded by "The Gunslinger," and followed by "The Oracle and the Mountains."
The Way Station is a location in the middle of the Mohaine Desert. It is where Roland discovered Jake. Father Callahan also appeared at the Way Station upon his death at the hands of Richard Sayre.
There was a Speaking Demon in the cellar of the station. Jake refused to go in the basement, but Roland went down there in search of supplies. The demon offered its warning about the upcoming confrontation between Roland and the Man In Black. Roland took the jawbone of the demon, thinking that it could prove useful in the future.
