Spang is a word that appears in nearly all of Stephen King's novels. This may not seems especially remarkable except for the fact that the word is not a common one. Also Spang is the last name of the family that lived in the house (and the town) that inspired the novel Salem's Lot. King was teaching english at Hampden Academy in Hampden Maine when 'Salem's Lot was written. King is attributed with the comment that Hampden was so aggressively normal that it had to harbor some dark secret (vampires?).
