Sheriff Ira and all his deputies take on the creatures in Sleepwalkers in an attempt to stop them. Though they are fail and are killed to the last man (to include several Indiana State Police) they show tremendous courage. The Sheriff's last act is to free Tanya Robertson. It costs him his life. Sheriff Ira and his deputies are an example of King's positive portrayal of American Police officers. Though the officers are outclassed and outfought they aren't cowards.
