The Wolf is one of the twelve Guardians of the Beams that hold up the Dark Tower. The Wolf has a cybernetic form, similar to Shardik. According to Dark Tower End-World Almanac, the cybernetic form created by the Old Ones is the Wolves from the Wolves of the Calla. Their past function was to protect the beam.
