Maureen Alvorson is one of the janitors at The Institute.

History[]

Maureen's husband ran up a lot of debt while him and Maureen were married and ended up running off, leaving Maureen with the debt. Finding herself struggling to pay back the debt, she got a job at The Institute as a janitor. To get extra money, she would tell Julia Sigsby and Trevor Stackhouse details that the children at The Institute told her, which made her feel terrible. As her time at The Institute went by, she became sickly but tried her best not to show it to the staff. However, most of the children knew she wasn't well. When Luke Ellis arrived at The Institute, he grew a close bond with Maureen and helped her pay off her debt by finding her a really good lawyer. Maureen then helped Luke escape by leaving hidden notes and symbols to help him escape. During the night Luke escaped, Maureen wrote in an unoccupied room with lipstick that hell was waiting and she would see The Institute faculty there before hanging herself in the room's bathroom. She was later discovered and cremated in Back Half.

Appearance[]

As time went by during Luke's stay at The Institute, Maureen became more sickly in appearance, looking pale and older than her age. She had teeth that needed dental care and also had bad breath, which Luke thought of as a sick person's breath.

Personality[]

Maureen was the nicest worker at The Institute and was the only worker who felt sorry for the children there. She felt deeply remorseful for her role as The Institute's snitch as well as staying silent about the torture that went on there. She would often reward the children with extra tokens for helping her with work and would also comfort the children as best as she could under the rules that limited interaction was allowed between the workers and children. Despite not clearly stated, it was likely she was disliked by most, if not all, of her colleagues due to her nice, caring nature.
