Kathleen Doyle Bates (born June 28, 1948) is an American actress and director. She has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award (Best Actress 1990; Misery), two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. who has been in such films as About Schmidt, Fried Green Tomatoes and Titanic, where she played the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown. In 1995, Bates began working behind the screen as well, as a director, on several television series; her early directing jobs include episodes of Great Performances, Homicide: Life on the Street, and NYPD Blue.
