Kathleen Doyle Bates (born June 28, 1948) is an American actress and director. She has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award (Best Actress 1990; Misery), two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. who has been in such films as About Schmidt, Fried Green Tomatoes and Titanic, where she played the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown. In 1995, Bates began working behind the screen as well, as a director, on several television series; her early directing jobs include episodes of Great Performances, Homicide: Life on the Street, and NYPD Blue.

Bates appeared in Misery, where she played Annie Wilkes (for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award in 1991), and Dolores Claiborne, where she played the titular character. In fact, Bates says that her role as the complex Dolores Claiborne is her all-time favorite movie role. She also appeared in The Stand
