George Bannerman is a major character character of the Stephen King multiverse.

Serving as the deuteragonist of The Dead Zone, a minor character in Cujo and a mentioned character of Needful Things, The Dark Half, Gwendy's Button Box, and Elevation.

Biography

He was the sheriff in Castle Rock, Maine from November 1972 until his death in July of 1980. He has a wife named Vicky and a daughter named Katrina. He also has an Irish Setter dog named Rusty who was living during the events of The Dead Zone, but had been put down by the events of Cujo. He is described as being a very large man with dark, curly hair, and wears rimless spectacles.

He worked with Johnny Smith to track down the Castle Rock Strangler also known as the November Killer, his deputy Frank Dodd.

He was killed by the rabid dog Cujo.

Sometime later, a road near Castle View was named Bannerman Road in his honor. According to Elevation, Bannerman Road was a portion of Route 119 that ran through Castle Rock.

According to Gwendy's Magic Feather, he was buried in Castle Rock's Homeland Cemetery.

According to Mike Noonan in the novel Bag of Bones, the Castle County Sheriff in August 1901 was Nehemiah Bannerman. Although it isn't stated outright, it is likely that Nehemiah and George were relatives.

In the TV series

Bannerman's character was fused with the character of Walt Hazlett to create the original character of Walt Bannerman – both husband of Sarah Bracknell and sheriff of Cleaves Mills, Maine.
