It's interesting to note that while the U.S. Military does not come off very well in Stephen King's stories American police officers often do. Typically ,if there is a police officer in a King story they are (usually) portrayed sympathetically (see The Stand, Insomnia and From a Buick 8). Often they are shown as men and women who are outnumbered and asked to do a job that others don't want to do. Especially when having to take on King's creations ,such as the Vampires in Sleepwalkers, which results in the total annihilation of a sheriff agency. A dangerous and sometimes dirty job. While there are exceptions to this standard (See Rose Madder and Under the Dome) King has been fairly consistent in his adherence to how he portrays American Law Enforcement. An interesting contrast to his depiction of the U.S. military.
