!!!SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK AND MOVIE VERSION OF THE SHINING!!!
Back at Christmas I got The Shining and its sequel Doctor Sleep. I finished the first book, and I loved it! By far my favorite Stephen King book!
My two favorite characters were:
Jack Torrance
Danny Torrance
I couldn't believe how much empathy I was feeling for Jack in this book. Like any book to its movie adaptation, there is a lot of differences, and man were there a ton of differences between movie Jack and book Jack!
In the movie, I felt that the guy was sort of a jerk that just finally is done with everything and goes insane (I still liked him though, he was my favorite).
In the book though, it is more like he was deeply manipulated and (this is the only I could think to word it) possessed by the Overlook and its ghosts (I'm sure there is a better way to describe what happened to Jack, but that is the best I could do).
When you look at the reviews and stuff for the book, it'll say something like 'Bone-chilling' or 'Thrilling and terrifying'. But I wasn't scared or disturbed at all throughout it. Truthfully, the ending was just depressing. Jack was Danny's favorite parent, and Jack is the one that goes insane and dies at the end of the book.
As I read, I had different voices for each of the characters (I read in my head obviously, so I could do basically any voice).
I personally loved my Danny voice, which was a little kid voice that was just adorable.
Jack Torrance just sounded like Jack Nicholson, so nothing different there.
Wendy didn't sound like Shelley Duvall, but similar.
Sometimes Dick would sound like Scatman Crothers, and other times not.
And basically, every other character sounded British...for some reason.
My favorite part, which is same as many I assume, is the climax when Jack goes on the rampage and Wendy, Danny, (and Dick at one point) try to get out.
