For those curious about why I made this poll, I was listening to Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds - which is based on the H. G. Wells novel about Martians (which look like giant octopuses and communicate telepathically with each other) invading Britain in 1901.
The Martians primarily use giant Tripods armed with Heat Rays and toxic Black Smoke to take over; later creating the Handling and Flying Machines as well as bringing some of Mars' "Red Weed" with them to attack Earth's flora and fauna. However, they're ultimately taken down 22 days later by Earth's bacteria - which the Martians have no immunity to due to their biology.
With War of the Worlds having a lot of crossovers - with examples including The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Evil Dead and Superman - and with the Narrator's wife in the Jeff Wayne Musical been called "Carrie", it made me wonder about a crossover between Carrie and The War of the Worlds (just for a bit of fun).
- To make a backstory for this hypothetical idea, the events of Carrie happen up to Carrie discovering her telekinetic powers and been asked to go to the Prom by Tommy Ross. At the same time, the Martians launch their pods at the USA - with the first landing in Woking, Maine.
(I know there's no place in Maine called Woking, but then Stephen King has made fictional locations in Maine for his books - such as Derry - and his version of Chamberlain is a fictionalized version rather than the real location, so I think this can work for this hypothetical crossover).
- Needless to say, the Martians reveal themselves to the general public and prove to be violent; attacking those who get too close with a Heat Ray (notably killing astronomer Ogilvy and a group of others during a live TV broadcast) before building their "Fighting Machines" to begin attacking the populace - with more cylinders arriving and landing in different places around America as numerous tripods begin marching across the continent; fighting off the military forces that try in vain to stop them.
In this case, Carries first "public" use of her telekinesis that her classmates and teachers see/experience isn't at the Prom after the prank with the pig's blood, but when she uses it to successfully take down a trio of Tripods that begin attacking Chamberlain; her telekinesis been able to damage/tear off their heat rays to disarm their main weapon before ripping off their robotic legs to make them fall over.
- With Chamberlain's population coming together in an attempt to prepare defenses against the Martian threat, especially as they witness reports of other areas of the country falling to the Martians as cylinders continue to arrive, and with Carrie proving to be their best asset against the invaders (something the Martians will also have picked up on and passed on information about to the rest of their race), how do you think this would play out?
= Do you think Carrie and the inhabitants of Chamberlain could hold out for the duration of the invasion (22 days) until the Martians ultimately succumb to infection, with Carrie and many of the survivors having a happier ending then they did in the original novel?
= Would the Martians ultimately end up overpowering Carrie's attempts to resist/defeat them and proceed to capture/kill her and the rest of the town (Carrie effectively been a metaphorical "Thunder Child" in this case, in that her valiant efforts sadly still end with her failing)?
= Would Carrie be brought down by the other inhabitants of Chamberlain who fear her power and believe her to be a demon/devil - regardless of her more positive actions (I could honestly see Margaret White acting like Parson Nathaniel in this situation and even pulling a Mrs. Camody from The Mist by forming a cult from some of the frightened inhabitants of the town; generating fear of Carrie by trying to link the usage of Carrie's powers to the arrival of the “Demons”).
= Would a combination of the above or something else entirely happen?
Curious to see what you think about this hypothetical crossover idea.
What do you think?
